About Bryon
"I was born and raised in Portage la Prairie. After spending some time in Winnipeg, and more recently the Dominican Republic, I decided to embrace my roots and move back to the town where I grew up. This is, and always will be, the place that I call home. I believe that running for office and serving this community would be the best way to share the skills and experiences I have gained in my over 30 years in business.
I love Portage la Prairie. I truly believe its best days are still to come. Its unlimited potential is something I look forward to unlocking if you give me the opportunity to be your Mayor.
One of the biggest challenges Portage currently faces is the out of control crime rate. While there are many issues to be dealt with, it is my belief that Portage cannot, and will not, reach its full potential until the issue of crime is addressed in real, meaningful ways. It is imperative that local and provincial governments are united by a common goal, and that goal must be to make the citizens of Portage la Prairie feel safe in their homes, their yards, on their streets, and anywhere they choose to go in our community at any time of day. All citizens have the right to feel safe and secure in their homes and when they are out and about in our city.
That is why my main initiative will be to invest in community policing. We need to embrace the diversity of Portage la Prairie with a policing policy that includes community policing, with support systems for addiction and mental health. Community-oriented policing, including foot patrols, bike patrols, returning to neighbourhood beats for officers, and the establishment of resource centres in order to be proactive, as opposed to reactive.
While crime is not the only issue holding us back, it is definitely a contributing factor to other issues. Dealing with the issue of crime first will have a positive ripple effect on many other issues in our city. While working first and foremost to drive down crime, I will also be working towards these initiatives, given the opportunity to be your Mayor." -Bryon Hamilton, 2022
